What is Melatonin?

It is a hormone produced in the pineal gland, which is released into the cerebral and systemic circulation. The synthesis and release of melatonin are stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light, so this hormone has a lot to do with our circadian rhythm and functions of our body during the day and night.

How does it work?

It has a 24-hour period, repeated every day. The signal to produce melatonin from the biological clock starts at sunset, around 8 AM; it reaches its maximum at 3 AM; and it lowers during the rest of the day. As melatonin is produced in the absence of light, any kind of ambient light inhibits its production.

Its main function is to help the body maintain its natural rhythm and a normal cycle; this is why any condition affecting the production can lead to more or less severe diseases, such as sleep disturbance, fatigue, anxiety, loss of memory, depression, etc.

What is the purpose of this test?

To evaluate whether the biological clock is working properly or not and diagnose internal desynchronization states that may exist. This is done by measuring the levels of melatonin in saliva over 24 hours as well as the time at which occurs the start of melatonin synthesis, called DLMO (Dim Light Melatonin Onset) and marks the predisposition of the body to sleep.
