Virology, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics

The objective of the Virology, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics unit is to offer an integrated service in different fields for the interpretation of results and genetic counseling.

In the clinical area, the unit provides different specialists equipped with all necessary tools for diagnosis, monitoring and evolution of a broad panel of infectious diseases and genetic studies of diseases of autoimmune origin.

Analytical Techniques

  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) conventional specific amplification of DNA sequences where the amplified product is at an end-point of the reaction
  • Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): in real-time PCR, the amplification and detection processes occur simultaneously in the same closed vial without any need of further manipulation.

Fields of work

  • Detection, identification and quantification of viral and bacterial pathogens
  • Bird sexing
